9v9 soccer formations: which one fits your team?
The best 9v9 soccer formations for youth teams, including 3-2-3 and 3-3-2, with each position’s job and a fair rotation for 12 players.
In 9v9 you have a goalkeeper and eight outfield players. US Soccer suggests 1-3-2-3 (3-2-3), which adds two wingers to its 7v7 shape and grows into 4-3-3 at 11v11. 3-3-2 is the other common choice: solid, simple and with two forwards up front.
Who plays 9v9 soccer?
In 9v9 each team has a goalkeeper and eight outfield players. It is the step between 7v7 and 11v11, and the ages differ by country. US Soccer and England Football describe theirs as the largest format for the age, and smaller games can still be played.
| Country | Who sets it | Age groups for 9v9 | Other details |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | US Soccer | U11 to U12 (largest format) | 11v11 from U13 |
| England | England Football | U12 and U13 from 2026-27 (largest format) | 11v11 from U14 |
| Australia | National MiniRoos formats | Under 10 and Under 11 | Goalkeeper used, up to 5 substitutes, two 25-minute halves, no offside |
| Canada | Canada Soccer | U12 to U13 | Ideal match day roster of 14 players, up to 18, matches up to 70 minutes at U12 and 80 at U13 |
The best 9v9 formations
With eight outfield players, almost every 9v9 shape keeps three lines. These are the ones coaches use most, written without the goalkeeper.
| Formation | Shape | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-2-3 | Three defenders, two midfielders, three forwards | Width in attack and a clear path to 4-3-3. It is the 9v9 shape US Soccer suggests. | Only two central midfielders, so the wingers must help. |
| 3-3-2 | Three defenders, three midfielders, two forwards | A balanced shape that is easy to teach, with a strike partnership. | The wide midfielders have a lot of running to do. |
| 2-3-3 | Two defenders, three midfielders, three forwards | Attacking teams that keep the ball well. | Two defenders can be exposed by quick forwards. |
| 3-1-3-1 | Three defenders, one holding midfielder, three attacking midfielders, one forward | Teams that want a holding player in front of the defence. | The forward needs quick support. |
| 4-3-1 | Four defenders, three midfielders, one forward | Teams that concede a lot and need a safer back line. | Few players forward, so goals can be hard to come by. |
9v9 positions and roles in a 3-2-3
The 3-2-3 is US Soccer’s suggested 9v9 shape, written as 1-3-2-3 with the goalkeeper. To switch to a 3-3-2, move one winger into midfield and push the other up next to the striker.
| Line | Positions | Main job |
|---|---|---|
| Goalkeeper | Goalkeeper | Stop shots and start attacks with short passes to the back three. |
| Defence (3) | Left back, centre back, right back | Defend as a three. The outside backs step wide when the team has the ball. |
| Midfield (2) | Two central midfielders | Win the ball in the middle and pass it to the wingers and striker. When one goes forward, the other stays. |
| Attack (3) | Left winger, striker, right winger | Stretch the pitch, run behind the defence and press when the ball is lost. The wingers drop back to help the midfield two. |
How to choose a 9v9 formation
Look at next season. If your players move to 11v11 next year, 3-2-3 grows into 4-3-3 when you add one defender and one midfielder. 3-3-2 grows into 4-4-2 the same way.
Count your defenders. If you have two quick, confident defenders, 2-3-3 can work. If not, keep three at the back.
Use 3-3-2 if you are losing the midfield. A third midfielder makes it harder for the other team to play through you.
Pick a shape and give it a few games before you judge it.
Sample rotation: 12 players in a 9v9 3-2-3
In the soccer rotation tool, choose 9 a side and a rotating keeper, then enter the positions with the goalkeeper first: Goalkeeper, Left back, Centre back, Right back, Left central midfielder, Right central midfielder, Left winger, Striker, Right winger.
With 12 players, two 30-minute halves and a change every 7 minutes 30 seconds (enter 7:30), the 60-minute game makes 8 blocks. Every player plays 45 minutes and sits out one block in each half. Players 10, 11 and 12 sit first, then 7, 8 and 9, then 4, 5 and 6, then 1, 2 and 3, and the pattern repeats after half time.
With a rotating keeper, Players 1, 10, 7 and 4 each have two turns in goal. Choose a fixed keeper if only one player wants to play there.
