How to use it
- Add players in the order you want the rotation to follow.
- Enter how many players are on field and how many quarters you want to plan.
- Keep or rename the three line labels. The tool assigns field slots across them in order.
- Make the rotation, check each quarter and player summary, then save, share, print or download CSV.
How the rotation works
- For quarter b, the shared rotation engine starts at player (b × field slots) modulo roster size and selects the next field slots in roster order.
- Selected field slots receive the three line labels repeatedly. If the field size is not divisible by three, line sizes differ by one.
- The same rotation pattern repeats for each quarter. A player may repeat a line or miss a line; this is a planning pattern, not an AFL position rule.
- Equal quarters played are possible when the quarter count is a multiple of players ÷ gcd(players, field slots).
Average quarters per player
- A
- average quarters per player
- S
- players on the field or court
- Q
- quarters planned
- P
- players in the roster
Worked example
In the worked example, 12 places across 4 quarters gives 48 assignments. Dividing them between 16 players gives 3 quarters each. Other inputs can produce different individual totals; check the plan.
Equal participation cycle
- E
- quarters in one equal-participation cycle
- P
- players in the rotating group
- S
- positions in that group
Worked example
gcd means the largest whole number that divides both counts. For 16 players and 12 positions, it is 4. The cycle therefore needs 4 quarters.
Worked example
16 players · 12 on field · 4 quarters
12 field places and 4 bench places each quarter
Quarter 1
- Back: 1, 4, 7, 10
- Centre: 2, 5, 8, 11
- Forward: 3, 6, 9, 12
Bench: 13, 14, 15, 16
Quarter 2
- Back: 13, 16, 3, 6
- Centre: 14, 1, 4, 7
- Forward: 15, 2, 5, 8
Bench: 9, 10, 11, 12
Quarter 3
- Back: 9, 12, 15, 2
- Centre: 10, 13, 16, 3
- Forward: 11, 14, 1, 4
Bench: 5, 6, 7, 8
Quarter 4
- Back: 5, 8, 11, 14
- Centre: 6, 9, 12, 15
- Forward: 7, 10, 13, 16
Bench: 1, 2, 3, 4
The ticket example gives each player 3 quarters and 1 rest. Line labels cycle over field slots; they do not represent league position rules.
Frequently asked questions
Does this tool follow one Australian junior league format?
No. Field sizes and match formats can vary by age group and association. Enter the format you need and check your local rules.
How are the line labels assigned?
The tool cycles through the three labels across field slots. Rename them to suit your team. The labels do not enforce where a player may play.
Will every player play the same number of quarters?
Not for every roster, field size and quarter count. The summary shows the result for each player so you can review it.
Does AFL require players to cover all three lines?
The national junior guidance encourages regular rotations and opportunities across positions, but local competition rules may vary. This tool does not claim that each player must cover every line.
