7v7 soccer formations: the best setups for youth teams
The best 7v7 soccer formations for youth teams, including 3-2-1 and 2-3-1, with the job of each position and a fair rotation for 10 players.
In 7v7 you have a goalkeeper and six outfield players. The most used shapes are 3-2-1, which US Soccer suggests for 7v7, and 2-3-1. Both are simple and give every player a clear job. 2-1-2-1 and 3-1-2 suit teams that want a midfield diamond or two forwards.
Who plays 7v7 soccer?
In 7v7 each team has a goalkeeper and six outfield players. The age groups that play it differ by country. The table shows each body’s published format. US Soccer and England Football describe theirs as the largest format for the age, and smaller games can still be played.
| Country | Who sets it | Age groups for 7v7 | Other details |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | US Soccer | U9 to U10 (largest format) | 4v4 at U7 to U8, 9v9 at U11 to U12 |
| England | England Football | U10 and U11 from 2026-27 (largest format) | 5v5 at U8 and U9, 9v9 at U12 and U13 |
| Australia | National MiniRoos formats | Under 8 and Under 9 | Goalkeeper used, up to 4 substitutes, two 20-minute halves, no offside |
| Canada | Canada Soccer | U10 to U11 | Ideal match day roster of 10 to 12 players, up to 14, matches up to 50 minutes |
The best 7v7 formations
With six outfield players, most teams use three lines. These are the shapes coaches use most, written without the goalkeeper.
| Formation | Shape | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-2-1 | Three defenders, two midfielders, one forward | A safe back line and building from the back. It is the 7v7 shape US Soccer suggests. | The forward needs the midfielders to get up and support. |
| 2-3-1 | Two defenders, three midfielders, one forward | Passing triangles and width in midfield. | Only two defenders, so the wide midfielders must track back. |
| 2-1-2-1 | Two defenders, one holding midfielder, two midfielders, one forward | Keeping the ball through the middle. | Thin on the wings unless the defenders push wide. |
| 3-1-2 | Three defenders, one midfielder, two forwards | Teams with two forwards who like to play together. | One midfielder has a lot of ground to cover. |
| 2-2-2 | Two defenders, two midfielders, two forwards | Teaching players to work in pairs. | Big gaps if the pairs drift apart. |
7v7 positions and roles in a 3-2-1
The 3-2-1 is US Soccer’s suggested 7v7 shape, written as 1-3-2-1 with the goalkeeper. To switch to a 2-3-1, take one defender out of the back three and add a centre midfielder between the other two midfielders.
| Line | Positions | Main job |
|---|---|---|
| Goalkeeper | Goalkeeper | Stop shots, talk to the back three and start attacks with a short pass or throw. |
| Defence (3) | Left back, centre back, right back | The centre back guards the middle. The outside backs defend the wings and step into midfield when the team has the ball. |
| Midfield (2) | Left midfielder, right midfielder | Link defence to attack, help on the wings and get forward to support the striker. |
| Attack (1) | Striker | Score, hold the ball until help arrives and press the defenders when the ball is lost. |
How to choose a 7v7 formation
Use 3-2-1 if your team is new to 7v7 or concedes a lot. Three defenders make the back line easy to understand.
Use 2-3-1 if your players are confident on the ball and you want more passing options in midfield.
Think ahead to 9v9. US Soccer’s 7v7 shape grows into its 9v9 shape, 3-2-3, by adding two wingers, so players keep the same back three.
Keep moving players around. At this age, playing different positions helps players learn the whole game, and US Soccer says formations are a guide to change for your players.
Sample rotation: 10 players in a 7v7 3-2-1
In the soccer rotation tool, choose 7 a side and a rotating keeper, then enter the positions with the goalkeeper first: Goalkeeper, Left back, Centre back, Right back, Left midfielder, Right midfielder, Striker.
With 10 players, two 20-minute halves and a change every 4 minutes, the 40-minute game makes 10 blocks. Every player plays 28 minutes. Three players sit out each block, and each player sits out three blocks, never two in a row. With a rotating keeper, every player has one 4-minute turn in goal.
Changes every 4 minutes are frequent, so check that your league allows them. A change every 5 minutes makes 8 blocks instead: six players get 30 minutes and four get 25. The tool shows that gap, so you can choose.
