Round robin schedules: how many rounds and games you need
Estimate the rounds and fixtures in a single or double round robin before choosing dates.
For n teams, a single round robin has n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 games. Even team counts take n − 1 rounds; odd counts add one bye slot and take n rounds.
The count for an even number of teams
In a single round robin, each team meets every other team once. With n teams, that is n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 games. When n is even, the schedule takes n − 1 rounds, with n ÷ 2 games in each round.
Six-team example
Six teams need five rounds. Each round has three games, for 15 games total. A double round robin repeats every pairing with home and away reversed, so it has 10 rounds and 30 games.
What changes with an odd team count?
Add one empty slot to make the pairing count even. The team paired with that slot has a bye that round. With an odd number of teams, each round has (n − 1) ÷ 2 games, and each team receives one bye in a single cycle.
Dates and practical checks
A round count is not a promise about venue availability. Add the dates and gaps your league can support, then check travel, shared grounds and blackout dates before publishing the fixtures.
