The 4-2-3-1 formation: positions, roles and how to use it
How the 4-2-3-1 soccer formation works: the job of each position, strengths, weaknesses and how to set it up with a youth 11v11 team.
The 4-2-3-1 is an 11v11 formation with four defenders, two holding midfielders, three attacking midfielders and one striker. The two holding midfielders protect the defence, so the team stays balanced. It works best when the attacking three get close to the striker and the full backs help in attack.
What is the 4-2-3-1 formation?
The 4-2-3-1 is an 11v11 shape. Read it from your own goal: a back four, two holding midfielders in front of them, three attacking midfielders, and one striker. The goalkeeper is not counted, so some guides write it as 1-4-2-3-1.
The two holding midfielders are often called the double pivot. They protect the defence, which is why the shape is known for balance. When the team defends, the two wide attacking players drop back, and the shape looks more like 4-4-1-1 or 4-5-1.
4-2-3-1 positions and roles
Each line has a different main job. Labels vary between coaches, so use the names your players know.
| Line | Positions | Main job |
|---|---|---|
| Goalkeeper | Goalkeeper | Stop shots, organise the back four and start attacks with short passes or throws. |
| Defence (4) | Left back, two centre backs, right back | Centre backs mark the striker and win headers. Full backs defend the wings and overlap the wingers when the team has the ball. |
| Holding midfield (2) | Two holding midfielders | Screen the defence, win the ball back and pass it forward. When one joins an attack, the other stays back. |
| Attacking midfield (3) | Left winger, attacking midfielder, right winger | Create chances. The attacking midfielder plays between the other team’s midfield and defence. The wingers stretch the pitch, cross and cut inside to shoot. |
| Attack (1) | Striker | Score, hold the ball up so others can join in, and press the defenders when the other team has the ball. |
Strengths of the 4-2-3-1
Balance. Two holding midfielders cover the space in front of the back four, so the full backs can attack without leaving the team short at the back.
Numbers in midfield. Five players between the defence and the striker help the team keep the ball and win it back in the middle.
Easy to adjust. Push one holding midfielder forward and the shape becomes a 4-3-3. Push the attacking midfielder up next to the striker and it becomes a 4-4-2. You can change the shape without making a substitution.
Weaknesses of the 4-2-3-1
The striker can be left alone. If the attacking three stay deep, the striker has no one to pass to and loses the ball.
Hard running on the wings. Full backs and wingers must go up and down the whole wing, which is tiring.
Gaps can open. If the holding midfielders are pulled wide or both go forward, there is space in front of the back four.
More roles to learn. Four lines are harder for younger players to follow than three.
How to set up a 4-2-3-1 with a youth team
Check your format first. The 4-2-3-1 needs 11 players a side. US Soccer sets 11v11 as the largest format from U13, and England Football plays 11v11 from U14 from the 2026-27 season. Younger teams play 7v7 or 9v9, where a three-line shape works better.
Give each line one simple rule. The back four move across together. The two holding midfielders never go forward at the same time. The attacking three get close to the striker when the team has the ball.
Pick holding midfielders who like to pass and tackle, and an attacking midfielder who is happy to receive the ball with a defender close by.
US Soccer’s guide suggests 1-4-3-3 for 11v11 and says formations are a guide to change for your players. If your 4-2-3-1 is not working, moving one holding midfielder forward to make a 4-3-3 is a small change.
Sample rotation: 15 players in a 4-2-3-1
In the soccer rotation tool, choose 11 a side and a fixed keeper, then enter the positions with the goalkeeper first: Goalkeeper, Left back, Left centre back, Right centre back, Right back, Left holding midfielder, Right holding midfielder, Left winger, Attacking midfielder, Right winger, Striker.
With 15 players (one keeper and 14 outfield players), two 35-minute halves and a change every 10 minutes, the 70-minute game makes 7 blocks. The keeper plays all 70 minutes. Every outfield player plays 50 minutes and sits out two blocks, never two in a row. Four players come off at each change.
The tool moves players through the position list, so each player tries several roles in one game. Save the plan, then open it in the lineup card tool to check or edit any position before you print it. The position tracker keeps a record of who has played where across the season.
Frequently asked questions
What is a 4-2-3-1 formation in soccer?
It is a shape with four defenders, two holding midfielders, three attacking midfielders and one striker. With the goalkeeper it is written 1-4-2-3-1.
Is 4-2-3-1 a good formation for youth soccer?
It can work for 11v11 teams with players who can cover a lot of ground. Younger teams playing 7v7 or 9v9 usually do better with a simpler three-line shape.
What is the difference between 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3?
Both use a back four. A 4-2-3-1 has two holding midfielders and one central attacking midfielder behind a lone striker. A 4-3-3 usually has one holding midfielder, two central midfielders and three forwards across the front.
What does the number 10 do in a 4-2-3-1?
The attacking midfielder, often called the number 10, plays in the space between the other team’s midfield and defence. Their job is to link play, create chances and arrive in the box to shoot.
How do you defend in a 4-2-3-1?
The wingers drop back level with the holding midfielders to make a 4-4-1-1 or 4-5-1. The striker and attacking midfielder press the ball and block passes into midfield.
