The short answer

The 3-5-2 has three centre backs, five midfielders and two strikers. Two of the midfielders are wing-backs, who cover the whole wing on their own. It gives you numbers in the middle and a strike partnership, but it needs fit wing-backs and centre backs who can cover the wide spaces.

What is the 3-5-2 formation?

The 3-5-2 is an 11v11 shape with three centre backs, five midfielders and two strikers. With the goalkeeper it is written 1-3-5-2. The five midfielders are usually two wing-backs out wide and three central midfielders.

When the team defends, the wing-backs drop back next to the centre backs and the shape becomes a 5-3-2. When it attacks, they push high up the wing, almost like wingers. That change is the key idea of the 3-5-2.

3-5-2 positions and roles

The wing-backs are the players who make this shape different. Everyone else has a partner or a small group close by.

Strengths of the 3-5-2

Control of the middle. Three central midfielders can outnumber a team with two, such as a 4-4-2.

Two strikers. The forwards have each other to pass to and can press together.

Cover at the back. Three centre backs stay behind the ball when the wing-backs attack.

An easy switch to a back five. When the wing-backs drop, the team has five defenders to protect a lead.

Weaknesses of the 3-5-2

Space behind the wing-backs. If a wing-back is caught high up the pitch, the other team can attack that side quickly.

Heavy running for the wing-backs, who cover the whole wing alone. Tired wing-backs leave the team open.

Two against one on the wings. A team with a winger and an overlapping full back on the same side can outnumber a single wing-back.

Harder to learn. Players must know when to move from a back three to a back five, which takes practice.

How to set up a 3-5-2 with a youth team

Check your format. US Soccer sets 11v11 as the largest format from U13, and England Football plays 11v11 from U14 from the 2026-27 season. Players who used a back three at 9v9, in a 3-2-3 or 3-3-2, already know how to defend as three.

Pick wing-backs who love to run and can defend, and outside centre backs who are happy to move wide.

Teach one trigger. When the ball is lost, both wing-backs sprint back level with the centre backs. When the team wins it back, they push on again.

Share out the wing-back role. It is the most tiring job in the shape, so it suits shorter spells.

US Soccer’s formation guide suggests 1-4-3-3 for 11v11 and says formations are a guide to change for your players. If the 3-5-2 is not working, keeping the wing-backs deeper as a back five is a small first step.

Sample rotation: 17 players in a 3-5-2

In the soccer rotation tool, choose 11 a side and a fixed keeper, then enter the positions with the goalkeeper first: Goalkeeper, Left centre back, Centre back, Right centre back, Left wing-back, Left central midfielder, Holding midfielder, Right central midfielder, Right wing-back, Left striker, Right striker.

With 17 players (one keeper and 16 outfield players), two 40-minute halves and a change every 10 minutes, the 80-minute game makes 8 blocks. Every outfield player plays 50 minutes and sits out three blocks, never two in a row. Six players change at a time.

In this plan, the players listed 3rd, 5th, 7th and so on up to 17th each take two 10-minute spells at wing-back, and the others do not play there. So list your best runners in those places. Save the plan and print it with the lineup card tool.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 3-5-2 formation in soccer?

Three centre backs, five midfielders and two strikers. Two of the midfielders are wing-backs who cover the whole wing. With the goalkeeper it is written 1-3-5-2.

What does a wing-back do in a 3-5-2?

They give the team its width. A wing-back attacks down the wing and crosses, then runs back to defend next to the centre backs when the ball is lost. It is one of the most tiring roles on the pitch.

Is 3-5-2 a good formation for youth soccer?

It can be for 11v11 teams with fit, confident wide players. It is harder to learn than a shape with a back four, so many youth coaches start with 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 and add the 3-5-2 later.

What is the difference between 3-5-2 and 5-3-2?

They use the same players. In a 3-5-2 the wing-backs play high, as midfielders. In a 5-3-2 they drop back to make a back five. Most teams switch between the two during a game.

How do you play against a 3-5-2?

Attack the space behind the wing-backs, and put a winger and a full back on the same side to make two against one on the wing.
